My grandfather (83 years old) was just diagnosed with Alzheimer's and my family is looking into finding home health care for him. He has always been very clear that he doesn't want to live in a nursing home. His doctor has made arrangements with Hospice to come out approximately 4 hours a day, but we all still work so we need a little more help than that. Can you suggest a good home health organization or any other information that may help us to ensure that my grandpa is left in good hands?

Keeping your grandfather at home through the course of his illness may be challenging, but can be done. My advice is to remain realistic about the type of services he needs as time goes on. There are several home care agencies that can provide the type of care that he needs. This website (argetcare.org) can provide you with a list of homecare agencies in your grandfather's community. Just click on “Search” on the left side of this page. Or, click on “Assess” to evaluate your needs through a series of questions. The “Learn” button will provide you with opportunities to read up on care options. You can check the yellow pages under “Home Health Services” for a list of providers in your area. Also, hospital discharge planners and /or social workers (or hospice) may have a list of providers who work on a private basis. If you do an Internet search for “home health care” you will find several tools that will be useful for making a selections. One such tool is www.medicare.gov that gives you ability to compare providers. Finally, my office, Alzheimer's Arkansas (800-689-6090), can provide you with information and checklists that will be helpful in determining and selecting care.
