Ask an Arkansas Expert Library

My dad is 77, with Alzheimer's and diabetes; his wife is alcoholic and caring for him is extremely stressful on her. They live in Van Buren, in Crawford country; I live in California. What resources are available locally for them that will give her some relief, keep him mentally engaged, and not cost a fortune?

If the gentleman is a veteran, she could contact the VA Medical Center (Social Work Services - 501-257-6740) and speak with the Respite Coordinator for available services. Otherwise, many local nursing homes also offer respite. Alzheimer's Arkansas Programs and Services (501-224-0021 or 1-800-689-6090) may also be able to assist with resources available through them or in the local area.
